Professional Biography

Lawrence Williams is Director of Product Management at Ansoft LLC., subsidiary of ANSYS, where he is a trusted member of the senior staff.  Since 1994 he has worked at Ansoft to guide technical applications with specific emphasis on the market leading HFSS 3D electromagnetic field solver.  He has over 19 years experience in the fields of electromagnetics and communications engineering and has published numerous technical papers on the subject.  His recent work has concentrated on building design solutions that leverage electromagnetics for high-speed serial communications, RF integrated circuits, and complex antenna systems. 

Prior to Ansoft, Dr. Williams held various senior engineering positions in the Engineering Division of Hughes Aircraft Company, Radar Systems Group, where he was responsible for hardware development of advanced active phased array radar antennas, associated microwave subsystems, and antenna metrology.  He earned his Masters, Engineers, and Ph.D. degrees from UCLA in 1989, 1993 and 1995, respectively.  His dissertation research with Professor Yahya Rahmat-Samii at UCLA focused on a novel planar near-field antenna measurement technique leading to the prestigious Wheeler Award for the best applications paper published in the IEEE Transactions on Antennas and Propagation.  Dr. Williams serves on the Alumni Advisory Board for the UCLA Electrical Engineering Department.

Dissertation:  The Bi-polar Planar Near-field Technique for Antenna Measurements

Advisor:  Yahya Rahmat-Samii.

   *  Developed new method and measurement facility for planar near-field antenna measurements (IEEE Trans. Antennas and Propagat., Feb. 1994)

   *  Developed Sampling Interpolation in Bi-polar Coordinates—method to recover EM vector fields on a rectangular grid from bi-polar samples.    

*  Wrote near-field to far-field and back-projection imaging software to process measured data.
